Black Francolin

The Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus) was earlier known as the Black Partridge. It is the state bird of Haryana, India.

It is more uncommon than the Grey Francolin that is found all over India. The Black Francolin is resident in the northern part of the country, and is known as the "Kala Teetar" in Hindi. In the two years of my birding, I have sighted this bird just twice - one at the Surajpur Bird Sanctuary in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where a bird just shot out of the undergrowth with an explosive flurry of feathers and a harsh loud alarm call, and another at the Tal Chappar Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan where I could finally photograph one.

Black Francolin

The male Black Francolin is predominantly black as seen in the picture above, with a white patch on its head. The female, which I haven't spotted or photographed yet, is mainly brown. These birds are usually found in scrubby habitats and thick vegetation, usually near a water source. These are not forest birds and are more associated with grasslands.

The hunt is on to photograph more specimens, and find a female to post in this blog!
